– Sidestep

‘Sidestep’ engages a conscious deviation from portrait practice, an intentional shift in subject, scale, and chromatic resonance. This shift moves the focus away from capturing fleeting moments of life toward a slower, more contemplative engagement with colour, form and light.

These large, close-up florals are painted in vivid pinks, purples, oranges, and yellows against dark grounds, creating works that feel both immersive and intimate. The flowers are magnified to fill the canvas, stylised with bold, confident shapes and graphic clarity. They invite a direct, sensory engagement.

At its heart, ‘Sidestep’ is about permission — to slow down, to take detours, and to let colour and form speak.

“Continuation of Ideas”. exhibition title

“This series extends my ongoing exploration of ideas, process, and technique.
The paintings hold fleeting, arbitrary moments, marked with brushstrokes that
invite the viewer to step in and complete their narrative.”

“Little by little, the bird makes its nest.”

I paint when I am not playing the jazz violin. The two go hand in hand. One
sets the other on fire. When I feel good about my playing at night, the next
day in my studio the painting always goes well. Painting should improve as
the artist matures, just as in jazz the more you play, the more you understand
the value of improvisation and a greater sense of confidence can emerge.
This allows the artist to make a direct statement from within. With jazz less
can be more, as in painting five strokes can say as much as five thousand.
I consider myself an abstract painter. I draw my inspiration from nature, from
colours, textures, shapes, surfaces and remembering these, I can at a later
date produce them with feeling on canvas.
I like my work to have a certain amount of spontaneity to it. This helps me in
feeling that I am the guide of the brush rather than the master. I try not to
have a preconception of what the picture will look like, i will pick a certain size
of canvas, deal with the necessary materials and then let an image grow from
this. Of course this also applies to playing jazz improvisation.
It helps to allow the feeling of notes you imagine to pass through you rather
than trying to arrange them for the listener. In that way, they can play
themselves and the painting can really paint itself.

Richard’s creations are juxtaposed vibrant colours that overlap and stimulate
Taking a measured geometrical approach to abstraction. with sweeping
curves of deep ocher brown hues, primary colour blocks, and subtle circular
shapes.
The geometric curves depict the movement of the light and shadow bouncing
off the pristine sandstone buildings.
The moonlight bouncing off the Ocean and land rising deep into the sky
playing in the clouds, forming colour pallets of melon, pinks and misty grey
washes.
