Carrying Myself

Carrying on with the figure in the landscape makes perfect sense
to me, since that is how I see myself. So far, painting for me has
been about the best of the external world. This is how I celebrate
the shapes and colours that give me so much pleasure while I’m
out walking and tramping. In these paintings the figure is mostly
implied- it’s me, the one who is there, feeling it, smelling it, looking
and drawing, and later, painting.
My partner Llew broke down some old furniture for the wood, and
I’ve been working on the sides of drawers over the last few years,
in between other aspects of my practice. Hence the oak.
Painting for me is immersive, and it takes a lot of time and space
to get the flow going. That is why I developed my harakeke
sculpture/ installation/ printmaking practice, so that I could still
meaningfully create while also teaching. This process-based work
was so much easier to pick up and put down. It led me into this
form of printmaking / picture making, which has continued long
after the teaching ended.
In that more process-driven work I have tended to explore the
inner world of being-relationships and interconnectedness – by
making and slowly printing the symbols and forms
which the materials suggest. In these works I consider Selfhood in
relation to The Other.
My harakeke work is always firstly about my desire to connect with
the Earth through the plant world, using the intelligence of my
hands, within a matrix of ancient and contemporary weaving
practices. This gives me a home within the worlds of women’s
handwork, Tangata Whenua, and craft, the progenitor of
technology.
Seeking the integration of my several threads of art practice has
been a rich source of inspiration and direction for my work. Each
form has fed into the other. The explorations continue, with
painting once again pushing into the foreground.

Scrapes & Bruises

Is an exhibition of new abstract painted works by Gareth Brighton.

The abnormal surface qualities of the exhibited wall objects aim to marry the alluring and the unusual.

This effect is brought about through brash experimentation with different materials and
methods of approaches to both application and erasure.

All works created between
2024 and 2025.

Rituals

A series of paintings investigating the evolving narrative of an undiscovered
mythology.

Speculation is encouraged while viewing as each word I write diminishes the

unspoken power of imagery.
