These new works were inspired by a residency that I did in Kare Kare in June 2021 through the Eden Arts Trust. They are my interpretation of the wild and yet sometimes serene landscape on New Zealand’s West Coast. The light during wintertime here is extreme, allowing me to see something very different every day. I felt enveloped by the light and shade and rather than a mere observer I felt almost absorbed by the landscape. By being on locationat the beach at Kare Kare I could take this inspiration from a morning walk straight to the studio and capture my  immediate impression of the coast that day. One never ceases to be amazed by the unreal beauty of the west coast of NZ.
This show marks 40 years of exhibiting both nationally and internationally.

I prefer not to tell audiences about what my artistic intentions are.  I much rather people bring their own responses to my painting. Everyone will of course respond differently, which is how it should be. There is no one correct response, and I think it important not to contaminate peoples’ interpretation of art. You take what you want from it, and in so doing inject something of yourself into the work. In this way it is no different from listening to music, reading a book, seeing a movie or going to a play. That is, the art speaks for itself. The only thing I want to say is that in each of my paintings there is the suggestion of a human figure. Some are obvious, and others less so.  Hence the title of my show

Anthropolith’ – a human in stone.

I have for many years enjoyed and have been inspired by the many works of the old masters, their history and work have defined and influenced artists for centuries past and centuries to come.

This first showing concentrates on my oil paintings and musings from the past year. Painting to me is just as important as drawing and these paintings to me are like moments in time.

Vaguely familiar portraits and vignettes that when grouped, form an eerie narrative. An illusion of life or a situation created with marks of colour.

That is truly like magic to me.

“I have the gift of neither the spoken nor the written word, especially if I have to say something about myself or my work.

Whoever wants to know something about me – as an artist, the only notable thing – ought to look carefully at my pictures and try and see in them what I am and what I want to do.”

― Gustav Klimt

I second that!
