Peter Cleverly – JUST A MINUTE

Book Launch / Between Transience and Eternity

21May – 14 June

Paintings of people and flowers.. both floating in imagined spaces like
the depth of the sea and the depth of space, whimsical dreamy places.. I
make them up, invent them, as most of such places remain not yet
discovered…I dwell on such actualities, I want to picture them in my
compositions…I've titled a work, 'Just a minute'..I like the cliche
yet ambiguity of the sentence… in the amazing scheme of things and
comparisons it feels like the tiny amount of time we humans live on this
planet for….Flowers are so symbolic, their amazing beauty suppresses
all the ugly for me…I've always included flora in my compositions..
Mum often painted flowers.. still life with flowers..

Barry Clarke – Looking Back

These paintings are memories of places and the sea. The Pablo Neruda
painting is of course fictional as he never set foot in New Zealand, but I liked
that idea. I have spent time in both Denniston and Kakanui and both have
allowed me to indulge my love of the sea. This started when in the 1960’s and
during the sunset period of shipping, I went to sea as a boy seaman in the
Merchant Navy. After seven years I was living back on shore but the
experience remained and I am reminded of it when in both Kakanui &
Denniston.
