No Man’s LandSpringer, Smith, and Hammond return for another exhibition, each working in an entirely different
medium from one another but with a thread of connection running throughout. No Man’s Land
focusses on spaces we venture into at our own risk, objects of loss, and what will be left behind.
Springer’s paintings throw the viewer into an unrecognizable landscape of migratory bodies,
surrounded from all angles by eyes, mouths, hands and teeth. Confined by unfriendly forces outside
of their control and trapped inside unwelcome barriers not of their making. These unsettled beings
are adrift in a sea of uncertainty with no land in sight.
Blackened with soot and ashes, bound with hand woven cord, Smith’s pit-fired vessels and talismanic
charms speak of ambiguous loss, the veil of death’s dark shadow and haunting dreams of an afterlife.
The tightly sealed urns and begging bowls embody humanity’s ancient dance of creation and
destruction and our innate desire to hold onto the sacredness of life.
Hammond’s hand drawn digital prints lead the audience into a vibrant town full of ghosts. These
spaces are disturbingly empty, as if humanity has disappeared in an instant. Commonplace buildings
become archaeological visions of what has been, and of what was taken for granted.
