Dunedin-born artist Eion Stevens graduated with honours from the Otago School of Art in 1973. Several trips to Europe followed; the first of these included a period of study at Exeter College of Art, England. Stevens has been a regular exhibitor throughout New Zealand since 1979, and his work is included in important public and corporate collections. Survey exhibitions of his paintings have been held at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery (1989), the Centre of Contemporary Art, Christchurch (1997) and the James Wallace Trust Gallery, Auckland (1999).

‘A Stage Set for a Poem’, a 2007 exhibition at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery featured twenty paintings which Stevens produced in response to the verse of New Zealand poets. The exhibition was accompanied by a publication entitled PAINTED POEMS One Artist: 20 Poets (Longacre Press 2007). His work has been written about in major NZ art publications including Elva Bett?s NZ Art ? A Modern Perspective (1986), Warwick Brown?s 100 New Zealand Paintings (1995), and in Art New Zealand.

Stevens is a full-time artist, living and working in Christchurch. In addition to the pictorial sources noted above (including film, television and photojournalism), the port and sea inform his iconography.

Please contact the gallery for availability of the works in this exhibition.
