Amber is an Auckland-based painter who has been exhibiting her work publically since 2007. In 2010 Wilson graduated with a Masters degree in Painting from Unitec and has been represented by Anna Miles Gallery since 2009. Wilson teaches part time on the Bachelor of Visual Arts programme at AUT University.

The productive tensions arising when operating in both a premeditated and intuitive manner have provided a fertile ground from which to build my practice; Coupled with dual interests in the history of Twentieth Century abstract painting and the tradition of applied decoration over many centuries. The evolution of my pictorial concerns has occurred through a hunt for the elusive and fugitive abstract image, working between watercolour on paper and oil on canvas mediums. The limits and possibilities of the modernist avoidance of pictorial depth is an area of sustained interest resulting in the deployment of collage like strategies within my oil based work. The watercolours I have produced delve into the incongruous vocabularies of biomorphic modernism and the tessellated surfaces associated with Memphis design post-modernism.

“These latest works exhibited at Chambers continue and extend my inquiry into these concerns. In these works vaporous, dream like surfaces reveal and wrestle with restless patterning, hinting at the indeterminate yet familiar.” Amber Wilson
