Te waipounamu  Water Greenstone

He said, his eyes shining, “ I’ve found it, it’s just over the hill”
So she packed her brushes and paint, her pregnant belly, and their cat
And that night she followed him over the hill
In the morning a bellbird woke her
Get up, come and see
So she went, along a warm path scented with pine needles
And looked out at golden clay arms cradling still jade water
And she thought
This will be a good home

All the land that you can see

In this latest series I have chosen to work from imagination and memory, rather than photos or plain air.

My intention is to create work that is somewhere between Abstract and Landscape, while leaving the viewer space to use their own imagination.
The images can be both familiar and interpretive, while at the same time mysterious, atmospheric and other worldly.

My process is strongly intuitive, enjoying and embracing accidents, experimenting with drips, colour bleeding and mark making.
I like to work quickly and energetically in an attempt to keep the work fresh and dynamic.

Connection

Douglas is from Otautahi and has a strong connection to the sea.  His artistic journey began when sculpting stone.  However, when he later attended Wellington Art School he discovered a passion for painting with oil.   Douglas has previously exhibited at Letham Gallery, Auckland; Allegory Art Gallery, Christchurch; Port Gallery, Lyttelton and the Christchurch Art Centre.  His work is mainly oil on canvas, featuring atmospheric landscapes and street scenes, progressing to interwining elements of abstract, shape and movement.  He takes his inspiration from the land, the sea and the busy lives we lead today

Douglas’ exploration of his connection to his roots produces works that are bold and fresh.

The circles represent the past and the future.
