Ellie Gray –

CHristCHurch

Ellie Gray was born in Dunedin, and is now based in Christchurch, where she is a Painter and Secondary School teacher. Ellie graduated
from the Dunedin School of Art in 2014 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts, majoring in Painting.
CHristCHurch is a series of paintings that respond to the intriguing construction and finishing’s of traditional and modern churches
around Christchurch, which are full of curve, line, pattern and play of shadow.
She has a fascination with the relationship between colours, geometry, and subject matter and how these are interpreted by the viewer.
By spending time with the works, her aim is for the viewer to slowly uncover the subject matter as if they are trying to crack a code.

The highly geometrical works with exacting precision in every line, manage to appear as both flat, two-dimensional pattern and as a three-
dimensional illusion propelling forward from the picture plane. Gray plays a clever game with the eye, unsettling any preconceived ideas of
what exactly it is looking at, alluding to the desire for the subject to remain unresolved and open to interpretation.

Jane Barry –

‘Dreamscape’

This collection of paintings are loosely interpreted scenes visited in sleep.
Some vivid, summoned easily, others a vague recollection, dancing later around the edges of memory.
Places or the people there, scenario, destination  and the lay of the land shift and change, weaving a story.
Peaceful, chaotic, amplified or blurred, the played out sleeping sensical narrative rendered bizarre often on waking.
My work either ink on paper or paint on canvas seems always to lean toward landscape or water, these are the places I gravitate toward.
I like to blend, layer and bleed the paint using hands or brushes and scratch into the surface for what I hope creates a sense of the atmospheric.
‘When we are asleep in this world, we are awake in another’
-Salvador Dali.

Brad MacDonald –

Ōtautahi Overhaul

Born 1981 and speeding through life

using the tools of poetry, storytelling

and photography to distil how I

am bound to the human race and

explore the essence of being.

Themes of mythology, cosmology,

identity and transformation run

through my practice, linking the written

and the visual.

Based in Christchurch, New

Zealand, I spend my time creating

an interlinked body of work with

these underlying themes bound by

repetition. Repetition of the

quotidian. Repetition of Nature’s

wonder. Repetition of humankind’s

ineducability as we head toward an

abyss, the same abyss from whence

we came.
