“Continuation of Ideas”
This series is meant to be an overview, a continuation of my ideas, my process and techniques.
The paintings are moments captured with brush marks, situations that ask you too complete their narrative.

“Little by little, the bird makes its nest.”

These works came about during my sabattical from Papanui High School last
year.  They were made in response to the Alexander McQueen exhibition at
the National Gallery of Victoria (in Melbourne) and were proposed to show in
conjunction with his work.  I was under immense time pressure to produce a
lot work and thus made 120 skulls in 120 days using many materials new to
my practice. Whilst this collaboration did not come about I had a huge amount
of fun making them and have expanded my current practice to include many
of the materials and techniques explored during this time.

VIEWING THE VIEWER, WATCHING THE WATCHER

My body of work is based on photographs I took over a three year period, on various travels overseas. I was intrigued by the way tourists could be in a beautiful or interesting place and yet be more concerned with taking a photo, especially a ‘selfie’. Where was the ‘experience’?

I was also interested in observing the social interactions between people and how they maintained their personal space. My points of interest for the project were: obsession with the mobile phone, photos/selfies, physical distancing and the sense of being in a world of one’s own. I began to look specifically for interesting individuals and groupings that fitted my project concept. These selected paintings and drawings are my personal favourites. My subjects share a sense of isolation and vulnerability that I find compelling.

With the changes to our lives brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, my original focus concerning the negative effects of the digital world on our interactions with others, has become something more. With travel restrictions, loss of personal freedoms and an ongoing sense of isolation, the mobile phone and the ability to connect via digital media is now a lifeline for family and friends.  A negative into a positive.

DISCOILS

These works are what you see, abstract geometric constructions that emphasis materiality and process over sign and reference.

Working primarily with corrugated card, I make simple geometric constructions that are hardened with shellac, then overlaid with plaster and paint to activate and enhance surface interest. This results in a somewhat alchemic transformation where the soft base material acquires on a hardened metallic like qualities.
