Laneways of Christchurch

My work focuses on the hidden narratives within alleyways and transitional spaces,

where the lines between public and private and past and present become blurred.

By examining alleyways, I explore the balance between their practical function and their sense of mystery.

These spaces offer alternate perspectives, transforming the mundane into something intriguing

and challenging our usual perceptions of urban spaces.

My art delves into these spaces as metaphors for transition and ambiguity, reflecting the ever-shifting nature

of identity and experience. Through shape and form, I aim to reveal the unseen images and stories that

inhabit these in-between worlds, inviting viewers to reconsider what is often passed by unnoticed.

TO ALL THOSE WITH WINGS
Dreams give our minds wings to escape limitations
‘rising above’ much like birds soar above the ground,
Wings represent hope ,faith, angels, free spirits, freedom.
And a connection to something greater.

Still

I always start with two inks on calico and love the simplicity and flexibility of
the material. A restrained hand allows me some control to achieve areas of
subtle and dramatic contrast. I sit with the work to understand how my
minimal mark making with the needle and thread can work to create the space
and compositional balance. While overriding my meticulous perfectionism I try
to embrace what happens in the moment, working to follow my intuition and
create gentle interventions on the inked fabric.
These works are produced in moments of stillness while reflecting on
significant questions around life, the wider world and our place in it. Our
decisions around creating a long view for our land and people and finding
decision makers who can protect our environment provide continual
pondering. These quiet thoughts and emotions continue to live in the cloth
after the needle has finished.
