BATTLE LINES 235+ - Ross Gray

The title of this exhibition refers to the fight by heritage campaigners to retain heritage buildings in post-earthquake Christchurch with actions, words, images.

From street to studio: one citizen’s attempt to express, visually, reactions to the unprecedented and unwarranted near-wholesale demolition of our city’s stock of heritage buildings. This demolition madness is still occurring heritage buildings are still being sacrificed in the name of progress and future heritage.

Small-scale mixed media works, in the main spontaneously generated and developed, sometimes in a sort of delayed reaction: works re-worked since their first appearance during 2012 and 2013; and works which focus on the cathedral.

As always, the question is how to give full weight to painting at the same time as addressing the stark reality of the political forces and machinations of the knock’em down, juggernaut roaring away since early 2011.
