Artist Bio
Sophie Wood is an artist based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, graduating in 2025 with a BFA (Hons),
majoring in Painting, from Ilam School of Fine Arts. Her practice is grounded in experimental,
practice-led enquiry and informed by her interests in art therapy, hypnotherapy, and altered states of
consciousness. Painting becomes both method and inquiry, a way of accessing subconscious imagery
and embodied memory. Wood draws from her creative lineage, producing work both independently
and in collaboration with her son, Jasper. His spontaneous drawings, often influenced by video games,
books, and music, function as a means of emotional processing and storytelling. In contrast, Wood is
drawn to the careful preparation of materials and the slow, meditative discipline of painting. Their
collaborative works occupy the space between these modes: intuitive and deliberate, immediate and
considered. Wood notes, “Working with Jasper represents the lighter side of my practice, our
collaboration grounds me and sustains balance in my roles as both artist and mother.”
