Johann’s research and interest in the perception of place, the notion of HOME and belonging comes from a place of being a wanderer between worlds, cultures and geographical spaces. This space, which she calls ‘in-between’ is filled with tensions, contradictions and opposites. Drawing is a form of personal mapping and navigation of everchanging territories. A lot of her work can be seen as propositions, somewhat intangible, intricate structures – corresponding to the physical and emotional reality of displacement, a re-mapping and forming of new connections.

Johann has studied Fine Art at Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany and immigrated to New Zealand in 1997. She has a substantial track record and exhibition history. She has been a regular finalist and has received numerous art awards over the years. Highlights include:

• Merit Award Parkin Drawing Award 2022, 2020 and 2016
• New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award (E+J: Supreme Winner 2016)
• Merit Award National Contemporary Art Award 2014
• Supreme Winner CoCA/Anthony Harper Contemporary Art Award
• 2006 Winner of the CoCA/Guthrey Travel Award 2005
• Margaret Stoddart Award (Winner 2009 in collaboration with Victoria Edwards)
