What Lies Beneath
I prefer not to tell audiences about what my artistic intentions are. I much rather people bring their own responses to my painting. Everyone will of
course respond differently, which is how it should be. There is no one correct response, and I think it important not to contaminate peoples’ interpretation of
art. You take what you want from it, and in so doing inject something of yourself into the work. In this way it is no different from listening to music,
reading a book, seeing a movie or going to a play. That is, the art speaks for itself.

The Piercing Land

A selection of oil paintings on canvas and smaller drypoint prints on mulberry paper with oil and wax medium on board.

This series of works are not paintings of a place, they are flickers of memories of a glimpse from the corner of my eye, while driving back home.

We are all pierced through by the land, which grounds us. The rivers, hills and rocks of Tairawhiti Gisborne and Otautahi Christchurch have sunk deep, and the landscapes I create have become a reflection of my interior world. Time overlays memories, obscuring them and distancing them from the originally perceived reality.

Even when physically present the eye captures glimpses and restrings them together. When we remember, it is that collection we recall and draw in our mind.

Motherland

This scope of new work is both land & figurative.
It began with the painting ‘protection’ a depiction of a mother and child.
I started thinking about the metaphor ‘mother earth’, used because it reflects
the interdependence operating among human beings and the planet we all
inhabit. Where existence is as possible in complex form, capable of enormous
growth as it is the association with fertility and a source of life.
This shows imagery is a personification on the nurturing aspects of
landscape, embodying them in the idea of a mother.
And, much like the terrain of motherhood, the works are rendered
textured, some heavily layered while hopefully still conveying a sense of
fragility.
