Artist Biography

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: LAURIE ROODT
Laurie was born in South Africa. She enjoyed a rural life centred on family,
horses, and all things agriculture. From the age of five, she was sent to
boarding school where she excelled academically. Her family was very
creative – classical car restoration, saddle making, weaving, knitting, sewing,
painting etc. were all part of everyday life. Music and ballet were important
after-school activities, so indirectly she was exposed to arts of varying kinds.
Upon completion of her High School education, she entered the University of
South Africa and obtained a B.Compt degree while working full time serving
her Articles of Clerkship through an Accounting and Auditing firm. They were
tough years of hard work and perseverance in what was then, a ‘man’s
world’. Undaunted and determined, she continued working in the field of
Accounting and Auditing for several years.
Slowly, her focus shifted to the art of homemaking and raising a family. This
is when she obtained a Diploma in Interior Design from the Calder School
and started informal art lessons. Her introduction to Fine Art, was centred on
basic drawing skills, before moving on to water colours. However, art
remained a hobby while she spent the next 24 years home-schooling their
children.
To feed her creativity during the home-schooling years, Laurie took up
quilting, because fabric is clean, and it enabled her to work at the same table
as her children. Quilting also enabled Laurie to exercise her design skills and
to work with colour and texture. During these years, life’s adventure led her to
immigrate to New Zealand where she now lives and works.
Laurie obtained an MFA (Painting and Drawing) through the Academy of Art
University, San Francisco. At this stage, her preferred medium is oil paint,
and her preferred subject is the human figure.
