Artist Biography

My Story
I was born and raised in South Westland, on a dairy farm in Hari Hari, and moved to Canterbury in the
late 60s.
From a young age, I harbored an interest in art, transitioning to a full-time artist by the age of 22.
Initially, I concentrated on pencil drawings, mainly of architectural subjects, finding inspiration in
derelict houses and farm buildings.
I paint simple subjects from the vast landscapes of Canterbury and Otago that surround me. My painting
style seeks to depict the romance of our rugged New Zealand landscape, captivating viewers with
contrasting light and dark that create highlights and long shadows on building facades, boats, rural
railway sidings, beehives, and mailboxes. I also harbor a love for painting portraits, particularly of New
Zealand’s rural characters.
My work is exhibited widely throughout New Zealand, and I participate in both group and solo
exhibitions.
In 1992, I married my wife, Sally, and we have two boys: Angus (28) and Sam (25).
