Artist Biography

Kara Burrowes is a multidisciplinary artist living in Otautahi/Christchurch. She is interested in the mundane and overlooked and looks at ways to reinvent. Kara works with materials in an intuitive way to reflect her concepts and thoughts while incorporating personal narratives, peripheral observations and fleeting memories with the use of unexpected materials. Kara explores the themes of hiraeth, longing, identity, and the fleeting nature of time. Drawn to shadow, reflection, muted, foggy and hazy memory, she works to translate the feeling onto a surface through the use of a variety of media, often unorthodox, to express the darkest and lightest of moments.

With a background in art, design and landscape architecture, she has an affinity towards the three dimensional and her work has a sculptural quality. Her background has fueled her connection with and appreciation of the landscape, the three dimensional holistic world and the perspective of our place as a small speck within it.
