JQ Old Piano
Josh Quintrell was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1991.
At an early age, his father gave him a camera to help give him a way of expressing himself and as a way of experiencing the world around him.
His father showed him how to use a film camera and gave him several rolls of film to start him on his way and the two bonded over a shared passion that they now both had.
This sparked his love of photography and the mysterious processes surrounding this newfound arcane art and thus began a lifelong obsession.
He began photographing friends and family and anything else that a young child may have found interesting and as this was still the era of film, countless rolls of film were sacrificed to help hone his interest (and drain his father’s bank account in the process).
The interest was further cultivated in his later years and he decided to pursue further study at Ara institute in Canterbury in 2016 and graduating in 2019 with a Bachelors Degree in Design (Photography).
During his study, he experimented with alternative media and invented his own unique photographic printing process that encapsulates how the old masters painted on copper bringing an extra layer of texture to a normally flat medium.
The final results are often unusual, striking and frequently become a conversation piece alongside the image itself.
Josh has also gained recognition from the NZIPP Iris Awards with a bronze in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and a silver in 2018 respectively in the student category.
