Julia Holden is an independent New Zealand artist who defines her painting practice in relation to the disciplines of performance, photography and film. She is interested in opening up alternative routes to ways of thinking about, and presenting, contemporary portraiture. Arriving in Christchurch in 2012 Holden has focused upon achieving outcomes that encompass community well-being, wider social engagement, and developing new audiences for the visual arts. Recent projects have included the nationally travelling billboard and postcard exhibition Wish You Were Here and the accompanying 50-portrait installation its like now (2014), and Through the Glass Ceiling (2015).

Holden attended Elam, School of Fine Arts, as a ‘mature’ student, gaining BFA in 2007, followed by Master of Fine Arts by Research, Monash University, Melbourne 2011. She was a finalist in Australia’s national emerging-artist prize The Churchie 2011, was one of sixteen nationally selected Australian artists exhibiting in SafARI 2012, and was a finalist in The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, 2011 and 2012.
